An Updated Message to Our Customers

December 13th, 2016

Dear Andronico’s Community,

We’re excited to share that we will be open until Christmas, and afterward, will continue our transition process to become the new Safeway Community Markets—a new breed of specialty stores within the Safeway network!

As you may know, Safeway was born in Norcal in 1926---three years before Andronico’s opened its doors in Berkeley. Through their long and successful past they have championed union jobs, best value and quality.

Whilst it’s always hard to see a brand that you love, change, we’re proud of the community we’ve built together, and we know that with your continued support, your favorite neighborhood store will prosper into the future! Please come in and shop…and chat! We’re working hard to serve you everyday, and even with a new company owner, you can still count on seeing your favorite ACM products, and our smiling faces in the New Year!

We invite you to join our conversation on our #androniclose2016  Facebook page and on Twitter ..and be sure to join our final FitBank Challenge! Go to www.andronicos.com/fitmarket for more details!

Cheers from Your ACM Team!

A Letter to Our Customers:

Dear Andronico’s Community,

We’re excited to let you know about a new chapter in Andronico’s history.

In order to continue to prosper in a way that allows our stores to provide only the best quality and value, and to offer our union and management team members secure jobs and careers, we have decided to become part of the Safeway Norcal family.

Soon our stores will become “Safeway Community Markets”—a new breed of specialty stores within the Safeway network.

As you may know, Safeway was born in Norcal in 1926---three years before Andronico’s opened its doors in Berkeley. Through their long and successful past they have championed union jobs, best value and quality.

We are operating as usual throughout Thanksgiving and offering our famous Chef Prepared Meals, Organic Turkeys and all of the foods that you love for the Holidays! We don’t yet have a final day of transition, but it will likely be mid-December and we’ll certainly keep you posted.

Whilst it’s always hard to see a brand that you love, change, we’re proud of the community we’ve built together, and we know that with your continued support, your favorite neighborhood store will prosper into the future! Please come in and shop…and chat! We’re working hard to serve you everyday, and even with a new company owner, you can still count on seeing our smiling faces greet you in the New Year!

We invite you to join our conversation on our Facebook page and on Twitter.

Cheers from Team Andronico’s!

Press Release

PLEASANTON, CA — NOVEMBER 2, 2016 — Safeway and Andronico’s Community Markets announced today that they have entered into an agreement for Safeway to purchase the five Andronico’s stores in the Bay Area.

Renovo Capital, which acquired Andronico’s out of bankruptcy in 2011, approached Safeway earlier this year about purchasing their stores in Berkeley, Los Altos, San Anselmo and San Francisco, with the goal of preserving union jobs and keeping the stores operating in the same friendly, local way their customers have come to enjoy.

“Andronico’s Community Markets have developed a well-respected brand and loyal customer base, and we are committed to keeping the local heritage alive. Our goal is to preserve everything great about Andronico’s while adding Safeway’s innovations and great Own Brands products including O Organics”, said Tom Schwilke, President of Safeway Northern California.

Safeway and Andronico’s are working together to ensure a smooth transition for store employees and customers.  Andronico’s employees will continue working in their current assignments with their same union pay rates and benefits. A successful transition will create the potential for more jobs in the future.

“We’re proud that Safeway has chosen our stores and our TeamMates to join their dynamic company.  We’re synergistic retailers who share a commitment to best quality, local and artisanal foods, as well as in supporting union jobs within our communities”, said Suzy Monford, CEO of Andronico’s Community Markets.

The evolution of these stores will give customers new everyday low prices, and further expand the local, fresh and organic options they have come to expect at both Andronico’s and Safeway.
