HEN I think of memorable food experiences, specific components essential to their creation always come to mind. People, place, quality of ingredients, the traditions behind the preparation of the food and, not least, the season, all play into the experience. Relatively recent developments in the globalization of food sourcing can blur ones sense of place and season. There is nothing that matches locally grown, peak of the season produce. Springtime truly brings an incredible bounty to the table. This month, we are excited about the featured foods and events in our markets. We're bringing a bit of the farmers' market feel to our stores with growers, artisan food producers, chef demonstrations and increased food tastings. We are celebrating the season's best with our Market Day festivities on May 10.

One trip to our market and you'll notice our excitement about the season. The arrival of the local berry is a signal that spring is in full swing - and we've decided to make this glorious super-food the star. Just thinking about ripe, sweet, and fleshy local Bings and Rainiers makes my mouth water. Taking it further, one of the most satisfying dishes is a mixed berry (blueberry, strawberry and raspberry) shortcake with a dollop of freshly whipped cream. Peak of the season berries, freshly baked shortcake with a hint of orange zest, and cloudlike cream make for a sublime moment. Whatever your favorite, we will make sure you start with the best ingredients.

Our chefs, wine stewards, cheese specialists, produce people, and enthusiasts across the store are bringing to their department what they believe will enhance the culinary application of the berry. You'll meet the people behind this great food. And just maybe, some of the recipes and ideas presented in this edition of the Food Enthusiast will inspire you to enjoy the berry in ways not yet experienced. Celebrate spring! Good Eating!
